Led by Black trans women in Alabama, Transgender Advocates Knowledgeable Empowering (T.A.K.E.) was founded in 2012. What began as a peer support group for Black trans women to share their narratives quickly evolved into a powerful organizing force. It became clear that support alone was not enough—systemic change was necessary to dismantle the barriers keeping Black trans communities in crisis.

In response, T.A.K.E. expanded its mission beyond peer support, tackling urgent issues such as legal and re-entry support for trans people targeted by police, workplace discrimination, housing advocacy, the criminalization of sex workers, and the need for trans-friendly direct services. Committed to both immediate care and long-term liberation, the organization creates pathways to stability, fosters leadership and supportive community  while fighting to transform and abolish the criminal legal system, and defend trans rights.  By addressing the critical issues no one else was talking about, T.A.K.E. has become a cornerstone of Black trans resistance and resilience in the South, leading the charge for justice, safety, and self-determination.
